March 2011 - Tri-State Utilities has added a tenth combination sewer cleaner to our fleet. The newest machine is a Vactor 2112-PD Plus. This new machine was custom built to tackle large diameter pipe cleaning (up to 60”) found in storm water systems. The high pressure water jetting system has a multi-flow adjustment that allows the operator to crank the flow up to 100 GPM when needed. The suction is almost 50% stronger than a standard machine thanks to the 5,000 cfm blower. This new machine will increase the efficiency and productivity of our storm water crew.

February 2011 - At the CIPP Corp. Annual Installers Meeting held in February 2011, Tri-State Utilities was honored for our efforts. We have reached our 1,000,000 feet of cured in place liner (installed) milestone. Tri-State was also awarded the Project of the Year Award for our Henrico County Route 5 project, and brought home the Installer of the Year award as well. CIPP Corp. (formed in 1996) is a co-op of lining contractors who have the advantage of corporate buying power and knowledge, but operate regionally as independent lining contractors.

Tri-State Utilities is working on the Strawberry Hill project in Western Henrico County with G. L. Howard Contractors of Rockville VA. The project (engineered by Tracy Fee at URS) consists of the replacement and rehabilitation of an aging 8” sanitary sewer, in residential neighborhoods.

September 2010 - September 26th 2010 marks the 20th anniversary of Tri-State Utilities. Originally Tri-State was the idea of Steven F. McSweeney and his friend Preston Fussell (Pre-Con Construction). They wanted to form a service company in Tidewater Virginia to perform CCTV, Cleaning and HDPE slip-lining. Eventually Steve bought out Preston’s interest.

There were originally four employees (three still with the company), a Vactor, and a TV truck. The first job was a local CCTV and cleaning job for Vico Construction. Today we have over 70 employees, and have projects running from Northern Virginia to the Carolinas.

In 2007 Steve passed the day to day management of the company into the capable hands of his two sons, Andy & Joe.  With the partnership of Bob Schuster and the experience of Mike Floyd and other key people, we have been able to maintain the high level of technical expertise and service that Steve intended.

July 2010 - Tri-State Utilities has added a 9th Vactor combination sewer cleaner to our fleet. This unit is a Vactor 2100 Plus. The Plus series is the most recent design from Vactor Manufacturing. It is more fuel efficient, offers quieter operation, improved airflow, and better ergonomics for the operator than previous machines.

May 2010 - Work has begun on the Route 5 Interceptor Rehabilitation Project in Henrico County Virginia. The work on this project entails the lining of 9,000 feet of 15” to 27” reinforced concrete sanitary sewer with a cured in place liner. The job will also require 10,000 feet of bypass pumping. The design engineer is URS Corp (Tracy Fee) and the project superintendent for Tri-State is Bob Schuster.

May 2010 - Tri-State Utilities has completed the Bainbridge Blvd. Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation project for the Hampton Roads Sanitary District. The project consisted of lining 1,823 feet of 18” sanitary trunk sewer. Tri-State installed a cured in place liner supplied by CIPP Corp. The entire project required by-pass pumping. URS Corp. was the design firm. Bob Schuster from Tri-State was the Superintendent and Craig Welsh the Project Manager.

Project Manager/Engineer. Tri-State Utilities is pleased to announce that Jonathan Thomas, P.E. has joined our team as a Project Manager/Engineer. Jonathan comes to us with 7 years of experience from the Department of Defense, where he was a Utilities Project Engineer for NAVFAC in Norfolk, VA. He has extensive experience in managing large utility rehabilitation projects, as well as consent order driven projects. Jonathan is a 2002 graduate of Virginia Tech. We feel that this will add a new dimension to the services we provide to the community.

Fort Lee, Virginia. In November of 2009, Tri-State Utilities completed a comprehensive sewer rehabilitation project at Fort Lee. The base is located in Petersburg, Virginia and is undergoing a sizable expansion. At the same time, the utility assets of Fort Lee have been privatized under the Armies Military Utility Privatization Plan. Through this plan, the sewer system needed to be evaluated and brought up to regulation. This project encompassed, cured in place lining of approximately 60,000 feet of 6” through 30” sewer lines. Tri-State completed the task in seven months.
